biochar production and climate change
I doubt the traditional methods of charcoal making in soil mounds will have a climate mitigation effect because there is a release of small amounts of methane in the process which offsets any gains in stored carbon in the charcoal. In order to make it a carbon negative process the methane needs to at least be flared or at best used to accelerate the burn or generate electricity. What is needed is investment in farm and mobile pyrolysis technology to the global south to ensure that soil benefits are also matched by climate benefits.
