An Introduction to Biochar as a Soil Amendment
Julie Major, International Biochar Initiative (IBI)

From the welcome by Brian Snyder:
" The past year has been one of financial hardship for many Americans, both farmers and non-farmers alike. But very little momentum has been lost in terms of building food systems that feature more locally and sustainably raised farm products. Everywhere I go I hear about new farmers’ markets and existing ones going year-round, bigger CSA memberships, more stores buying from local farmers and restaurants featuring local food, and the list goes on.

"But we are all increasingly aware that sales of local food are only part of the solution to the overall challenges we face as a society. There is a much larger reason why we farm, and a more significant responsibility we acquire in choosing to serve our own communities as a priority. Ultimately, our local focus has a global significance, in learning how the peoples of the world can be fed and the natural environment restored from the brink of an unfolding disaster at the same time."

2009 North American Biochar Conference

Last updated December 08, 2009
Conference Poster

The 2009 North American Biochar Conference will be the first major biochar conference held in the United States. The keynote speakers for the conference will be Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Dr. Susan Solomon, Senior Scientist, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Center for Energy and Environmental Security (CEES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder is the lead sponsor and organizer of the conference. The conference is co-sponsored by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI).  Scheduled to run from August 9 to 12, 2009, the conference is designed to advance our understanding of the policy, business, scientific, and technical opportunities and issues implicated by the large-scale usage of biochar as both a sequestration agent and soil amendment.

More information on the conference, registration, and lodging options are posted on the conference website at: Americas Regional Conference August 2009.

Additionally, the site has information on a call for abstracts covering all aspects of biochar from scientists, engineers, users, producers, students, policy analysts, and policy makers.

Sponsorship interests as well as other questions are welcome and should be sent to biochar@colorado.edu.
