SumiBall is made with high-grade organic charcoal, made from sustainable sources of Japanese Cypress and Cedar, and encased in a honeycomb ceramic shell. The active core of each SumiBall traps unwanted bacteria which cause unsightly algae, unpleasant odors and plant disease. SumiBalls also adsorb toxic compounds such as chlorine, formaldehyde, and ammonia in a complex microscopic lattice. SumiBalls reduce acidity to a pH of around 6.5, and absorbs liquids to approximately 70% of its volume for slow release direct to roots.

Hunting for Agricultural Charcoal
For small scale field experimentation I just started checking on the availability of Agricultural grade charcoal, dust to 1/2 inch, high lignin feed stock, 4%- 7% moisture, and the lower the cook temperature the better.
A.M. Leonard, an east coast horticulture supply house, amleo.com , has activated Charcoal, special order, product # 691450 , 40 Lbs , $70
The only U.S. charcoal makers I have found are in Missouri. you can buy charcoal in La Bell Mo. at Dustin Strumph Charcoal yard 573-859-6384. They have 22 ton loads of dust to 1/2 inch , 4-7% moisture for $125/ton
There are about 1/2 doz gourmet natural charcoal distributors( Google charcoal wholesale). Cowboy is one, most import from South America or even China. You can find this natural lump charcoal sometimes at home centers at around $6-8 per 20 lb bag. You do have to grind it up, put loosely in a strong poly bag and run over on the driveway is a popular method.
Another avenue I plan to search are the large scale Orchid growers. Lady Slippers are grown in a 20% charcoal growing mix.

Also, I have many years experience in the chemical engineering around industrial pyrolysis of wood and biomass, the equipment available, what is generally used, what is being researched, as well as the attributes of chars and how they are affected by pyrolysis operating conditions.
